**Bengaluru, March 25, 2025** – The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is set to revolutionize its infrastructure maintenance with the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for digital inspections of its concrete structures. The initiative, starting with Reach 1 (M.G. Road to Baiyappanahalli), aims to proactively address structural issues and minimize service disruptions.
Currently, inspections rely on manual methods, which are time-consuming and pose safety risks. The new system will utilize specialized sensors to collect data, which will then be analyzed using AI algorithms and 3D modeling. This will allow for the detection and severity assessment of defects, providing real-time alerts to engineering teams for preventative maintenance.
The AI will automatically categorize defects based on size, type, and location, enabling data-driven maintenance decisions. All data will be visualized on a cloud-based platform, providing a comprehensive overview of structural health and facilitating optimized repair strategies.
Experts, like transport expert M.N. Srihari, lauded the move, highlighting the enhanced accuracy and efficiency of AI-driven monitoring, early detection of weaknesses, reduced long-term costs, and minimized service disruptions. The system also mitigates safety hazards associated with manual high-risk inspections. The initiative follows previous maintenance work at the Trinity station in 2018 and 2023, and a 2019 safety audit. This technological advancement positions the Bengaluru Metro alongside global systems, including the Delhi Metro, in utilizing AI for improved infrastructure management.
