Mon Mar 24 02:11:50 UTC 2025: ## Rare Jackal Sighting Stuns Birders at Perumbakkam Wetland

**Chennai, March 24, 2025** – A rare sighting of an Indian jackal at the Perumbakkam wetland has captivated local birdwatchers. Sadasivam Shiva, a birder from Chromepet, captured a photograph of the animal on March 15th during a visit to the wetland. This is believed to be the first recorded sighting of an Indian jackal in this area.

Mr. Shiva, who was primarily searching for migratory birds, was surprised to find the jackal in the deeper section of the wetland. Due to the distance, he only managed a long-range photograph using a telephoto lens.

The jackal’s presence in Perumbakkam is considered unusual, as the nearest known population is in the Thaiyur reserve forest, approximately 24 kilometers away. The animal’s journey across busy roads raises questions about its origins and migratory patterns. While Indian jackals are commonly found in other areas like Pulicat, this sighting highlights the potential for unexpected wildlife encounters even in urban peripheries.
