**New Delhi, March 24, 2025** – Delhi is bracing for a potential increase in electricity prices, according to Power Minister Ashish Sood. Sood attributed the anticipated hike to a ₹27,000 crore debt left by the previous Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government with power distribution companies (Discoms). He stated that the Discoms are authorized by the Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) to raise tariffs to recover this outstanding amount, citing a Delhi High Court order from the previous administration’s tenure. Sood added that the current government is monitoring the situation closely.
Meanwhile, AAP leader and former Delhi Chief Minister Atishi criticized the BJP-led central government for failing to deliver on its promised ₹2,500 financial assistance for women, calling it a betrayal of the people of Delhi.
The BJP’s newly elected Chief Minister, Rekha Gupta, began the inaugural budget session of the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Monday. The session, running until March 28 (with the possibility of extension), marks a significant return to power for the BJP after a 27-year absence. Gupta’s first act was preparing ceremonial ‘Kheer,’ and she subsequently moved a motion for the election of financial committees. The session’s agenda includes the presentation of reports from various committees and a continuation of discussions regarding water-related issues in Delhi. The session will also feature Question Hour and opportunities for special mentions of pressing issues.
