Jaishankar today received a collection of artifacts and documents related to Mahatma Gandhi from the Phoenix Settlement Trust-Gandhi Development Trust (PST-GDT) in South Africa. The handover ceremony took place in New Delhi and the materials will be housed at the National Gandhi Museum.

The artifacts chronicle Gandhi’s formative years at the Phoenix Settlement, his first ashram established in South Africa in 1904. Minister Jaishankar expressed his gratitude on X (formerly Twitter), highlighting the significance of Gandhi’s South African experiences (1893-1914) in shaping his philosophy of Satyagraha, a form of non-violent resistance.

The minister’s statement emphasized the continuing relevance of Gandhi’s life and message as an inspiration for generations striving for justice and freedom worldwide. The collection’s arrival coincides with ongoing commemorations of Gandhi’s legacy, including his contributions to India’s independence movement through pivotal events like the Dandi Salt March and the Quit India Movement. Gandhi’s assassination on January 30, 1948, is annually observed as Martyrs’ Day in India.
