VILLUPURAM, March 23, 2025 – Five police officers in the Villupuram district of Tamil Nadu have been compulsorily retired for their alleged involvement in the Marakkanam hooch tragedy of May 2023. The tragedy resulted in 14 deaths.
The officers, including two head constables and three constables from various police stations, were implicated in an inquiry committee report that found evidence of their connivance with bootleggers. The Deputy Inspector General of Police (Villupuram Range), Disha Mittal, issued the retirement orders following a departmental inquiry that substantiated the charges.
The incident, which occurred in the coastal hamlet of Ekkiyarkuppam near Marakkanam, sent shockwaves through the state. The victims were primarily residents of Ekkiyarkuppam. The compulsory retirement of the five officers marks a significant development in the aftermath of the tragic event.
