Sun Mar 23 16:27:30 UTC 2025: ## Telangana to Distribute Fine Rice to 84% of Population Starting Ugadi

**Hyderabad, March 24, 2025** – The Telangana government will begin distributing fine rice to 84% of the state’s population starting Ugadi, March 30th, announced Irrigation and Civil Supplies Minister N. Uttam Kumar Reddy. The initiative, to be formally launched by Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy in Huzurnagar, will provide 6 kg of fine rice per person monthly to eligible families.

Minister Reddy stated the change from the previously supplied coarse rice was necessary due to misuse and diversion of the subsidized grain to beer companies and poultry farms. He lauded the initiative as a “dignified, reformative step” to ensure food security and protect public resources, reflecting Sonia Gandhi’s vision for a hunger-free India.

The Minister also criticized the previous BRS government for allowing Andhra Pradesh to overdraw Krishna river water, resulting in a current crisis in Telangana’s reservoirs. He cited the expansion of the Pothireddypadu head regulator and other projects in Andhra Pradesh as the cause for the overdraw of 512 TMCft out of the total 811 TMCft.

Earlier on Sunday, Minister Reddy, along with several other ministers and MLAs, visited the Janpahad Dargah in Suryapet district to offer prayers.
