Fri Mar 21 19:40:56 UTC 2025: ## Thousands Defy Erdogan, Protest Arrest of Istanbul Mayor

**Istanbul, Turkey** – Tens of thousands of protesters have taken to the streets of Istanbul for a third consecutive day, defying a government crackdown to demonstrate their support for imprisoned Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu. The demonstrations, which have spread across Turkey, follow Imamoglu’s arrest on Wednesday on charges of corruption and alleged “terror” links, days before he was expected to announce his candidacy for the 2028 presidential election.

Opposition leader Ozgur Ozel estimated that over 300,000 people participated in protests across Istanbul alone. Protests were hampered by road closures, preventing a single, massive gathering. The government has imposed a four-day ban on political demonstrations.

Imamoglu’s arrest followed the invalidation of his university diploma by Istanbul University, effectively disqualifying him from running for president. He intends to challenge this decision.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has vowed to suppress the protests, accusing the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) of links to corruption and “terror” organizations. He framed the arrest as an anti-corruption operation and dismissed allegations of political motivations.

Government critics, however, see the actions against Imamoglu as an attempt to eliminate a major challenger to Erdogan. Al Jazeera’s Aksel Zaimovic reported a significant student presence at the protests, emphasizing that the demonstrations are not solely about Imamoglu but represent a broader challenge to what protesters describe as “systemic injustice” in Turkey.

At least 88 protesters have been arrested, and 16 police officers injured during the demonstrations, according to Turkish media. Authorities also detained 54 individuals for online posts deemed “incitement to hatred.” The CHP has denounced Imamoglu’s arrest as a “coup.” The arrest of Imamoglu, who dealt a major blow to Erdogan’s party in 2019 by winning the Istanbul mayoral race, has ignited widespread unrest and raised concerns about political freedom in Turkey.
