**Nagpur, Maharashtra, March 22, 2025** – A 40-year-old welder, Irfan Ansari, succumbed to injuries sustained during the communal violence that erupted in Nagpur earlier this week. Ansari passed away at 1:20 p.m. on Saturday at the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMCH), according to hospital officials.
Ansari had been admitted with severe head wounds and a fractured leg after being caught in the violence on Monday, March 17th, while en route to Nagpur railway station to catch a train. The violence, characterized by widespread stone-pelting and arson, stemmed from rumors that a religiously significant cloth was burned during protests demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar.
Ansari’s family was initially informed of his hospitalization following an “accident” and remained unaware of the circumstances surrounding his injuries until later. His brother, Imran, previously stated that Irfan was in the ICU receiving oxygen. The incident adds another tragic dimension to the aftermath of the Nagpur violence.
