Sat Mar 22 11:40:00 UTC 2025: ## Former Homer City Power Plant Stacks Demolished in Controlled Explosion

**Homer City, PA –** A controlled demolition of the former Homer City Generating Station’s four smokestacks took place Saturday morning at approximately 7:30 a.m. While three stacks fell as planned, one remained partially standing after the explosions. The demolition also included the toppling of the cooling towers roughly 20 minutes later, sending plumes of smoke into the air.

The demolition, which occurred on the 2,400-acre site three miles west of Homer City Borough, was conducted with a 3,000-foot safety buffer zone established by the Homer City Development Corporation, which owns the land. However, residents within a two-mile radius were advised to prepare for potential consequences, including property damage from dust, debris, or broken windows, and were instructed to file claims with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

Center Township Supervisor Matthew Householder stated that authorities are monitoring the area for damage and assessing the impact on nearby residents. Particular concern is focused on an above-ground water tank serving over 300 customers in the area, with Homer City Borough Manager Rob Nymick assuring residents that the water will be tested once the site is deemed safe. The borough’s entire staff was deployed to monitor the situation.

The demolition clears the way for the construction of what is anticipated to be the world’s largest natural gas power plant on the site.
