**Chennai, March 23, 2025** – Legal experts warned against over-dependence on artificial intelligence (AI) in legal education at the “Justice Unplugged: Shaping the Future of Law” conclave held in Chennai on Saturday. The event, organized by VIT School of Law in association with The Hindu, featured a panel discussion on the future of legal education in India.
Senior Advocate P.R. Raman, Advocate Anirudh Krishnan, and Professor P.R.L. Rajavenkatesan emphasized the irreplaceable role of critical thinking and rigorous mental effort in mastering law. While acknowledging AI’s potential in streamlining research and information gathering, they stressed that it should not substitute the deep understanding developed through traditional learning methods, such as reading case laws and engaging in critical analysis. Professor Rajavenkatesan highlighted the importance of building intelligence through consistent effort, cautioning against the potential for over-reliance on mobile learning to hinder knowledge retention.
Mr. Krishnan further emphasized the importance of building a strong foundational understanding of legal principles through direct engagement with case laws, rather than relying solely on AI-generated summaries. The panelists also highlighted the crucial role of experienced legal practitioners in supplementing academic learning by offering practical insights into courtroom procedures, ethical considerations, and professional conduct.
The discussion also touched upon the challenges faced by law students aiming for litigation careers, particularly the limited access to higher courts and the need for improved regulation of law colleges by a unified body, potentially merging the UGC and BCI, to ensure consistent standards. The panel concluded by advocating a balance between rote learning and application-based methods, with a shift towards the latter at the postgraduate level.
