**Kolkata, March 22, 2025** – The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) began today in Kolkata with a match between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens. The highly anticipated opener, however, faces a potential disruption due to inclement weather.

This season marks several significant changes. Most notably, the saliva ban, in place since the COVID-19 pandemic, has been lifted following a consensus among IPL captains. This decision, made at a captains’ meeting in Mumbai, could potentially set a precedent for international cricket. Further rule changes aim to mitigate the effects of dew. The new season also features new captains for several teams.

IPL chairman Arun Dhumal addressed speculation regarding a potential Saudi-backed T20 league, stating that the BCCI supports the growth of T20 leagues globally but that no concrete plans for such a league in Saudi Arabia currently exist.
