Sat Mar 22 10:07:26 UTC 2025: ## IPL 2025 Season Kicks Off Amidst Rain Threat and Rule Changes
**Kolkata, March 22, 2025** – The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) began today in Kolkata with a match between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore at Eden Gardens. The highly anticipated opener, however, faces a potential disruption due to inclement weather.
This season marks several significant changes. Most notably, the saliva ban, in place since the COVID-19 pandemic, has been lifted following a consensus among IPL captains. This decision, made at a captains’ meeting in Mumbai, could potentially set a precedent for international cricket. Further rule changes aim to mitigate the effects of dew. The new season also features new captains for several teams.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal addressed speculation regarding a potential Saudi-backed T20 league, stating that the BCCI supports the growth of T20 leagues globally but that no concrete plans for such a league in Saudi Arabia currently exist.
The tournament features a 74-match schedule across 13 venues, with 12 double-headers. Several teams will play some home games at alternate venues. The final is also scheduled for Eden Gardens on May 25th.
Elsewhere, Sunrisers Hyderabad are favored to win their opening match against Rajasthan Royals on March 23rd, while Chennai Super Kings will rely on their strong spin attack against Mumbai Indians.
A logistical issue arose when the Kolkata Knight Riders’ April 6th home game against Lucknow Super Giants was shifted to Guwahati due to security concerns related to Ram Navami celebrations in Kolkata.
The IPL, now in its 18th year, continues to be a major force in the cricketing world, demonstrating its resilience and growth despite past challenges.
