Fri Mar 21 21:30:00 UTC 2025: ## IPL 2024 Begins with Kolkata-Bangalore Clash Amidst Weather Concerns

**Kolkata, India** – The Indian Premier League (IPL) 18th season kicks off today with a highly anticipated match between the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), and Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at Eden Gardens. This marks the first time these two teams, who faced each other in the inaugural IPL match in 2008, will open a season.

The tournament features ten teams playing a total of 74 matches, including 12 double-headers. This year brings several rule changes, most notably the reinstatement of the use of saliva on the ball after a COVID-19 induced ban. A second ball will be provided to the bowling team in the second innings of night matches to mitigate the effects of dew. The use of DRS for high full tosses and wide deliveries on the off-side has also been introduced. The impact player rule will continue, despite some earlier objections.

A significant change this season is the shift in captains for several teams. The most surprising appointment is Rajat Patidar, who has never played a T20I for India, captaining RCB. Other captaincy changes include Axar Patel for Delhi, Shreyas Iyer leading Punjab Kings, Ajinkya Rahane unexpectedly helming KKR, and Riyan Parag temporarily leading Rajasthan Royals due to Sanju Samson’s injury. Suryakumar Yadav will captain Mumbai Indians for their first match due to Hardik Pandya’s suspension. Rishabh Pant, after leaving Delhi, will captain Lucknow Super Giants.

The opening match is particularly significant as it echoes the inaugural IPL clash in 2008, which saw Brendon McCullum’s memorable 158 runs for KKR. Kolkata has won the IPL title three times, while Bangalore continues its quest for a maiden victory. KKR aims to break their pattern of faltering after winning the title. All eyes are on Varun Chakravarthy, a key spinner for KKR, and how Virat Kohli will counter his spin on a potentially spin-friendly pitch.

Both teams boast strong batting and bowling line-ups. KKR’s batting includes Venkatesh Iyer, Andre Russell, and Rinku Singh, while RCB relies on Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell, and Patidar. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Hazlewood will lead RCB’s pace attack, with Suyash Sharma and Maxwell shouldering the spin bowling responsibilities.

However, the excitement is tempered by weather concerns. Moderate rain is forecast for Kolkata on Saturday, causing disruptions to team practices on Friday. The match’s smooth execution remains uncertain due to the possibility of rain.
