**REYKJAVIK, ICELAND** – Iceland’s Minister for Children, Asthildur Loa Thorsdottir, has resigned following the revelation of a past relationship with a teenage boy. Thorsdottir, 58, admitted to a relationship that began when she was a 22-year-old counselor at a religious group and he was a 15-year-old attendee. The relationship resulted in a child, born when Thorsdottir was 23 and the boy 16.

While Iceland’s age of consent is 15, the relationship is legally problematic due to the power imbalance inherent in a counselor-counselee dynamic. Such relationships are illegal and punishable by up to three years imprisonment.

Thorsdottir, a member of the center-left People’s Party, stated that she deeply regrets the past relationship and acknowledges that she would handle the situation differently today. She maintains her seat in Parliament.

Prime Minister Kristrun Frostadottir, who reportedly learned of the relationship on Thursday night, called it a “serious matter” and accepted Thorsdottir’s immediate resignation.

The situation has been further complicated by a recent request from Eirik Asmundsson, the now-adult former teenage partner, for access to their son. Thorsdottir reportedly denied this request despite receiving child support payments from Asmundsson for 18 years. Attempts by Asmundsson’s relatives to contact the Prime Minister prior to the public revelation further contributed to the unfolding scandal. The revelation has sparked considerable public debate in Iceland.
