**New Delhi, March 22, 2025** – Transparency in the Indian judiciary remains a concern, as only seven out of 39 Delhi High Court judges have publicly disclosed their assets on the court’s official website. This represents a significant decline from 2018, when 29 out of 35 judges made such declarations. Further, the website indicates that one of those declarations is a dummy file.
While the Supreme Court’s website shows that 28 out of 33 judges have submitted declarations, these are not publicly accessible. This lack of transparency contrasts with six other high courts – Chhattisgarh, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Madras, Punjab & Haryana, and Kerala – that do publicly display asset declarations from their sitting judges.
A 2023 report by a Parliamentary Standing Committee recommended mandatory annual asset disclosure for Supreme Court and High Court judges, highlighting the need for increased transparency and public trust. The committee cited the public’s right to know the assets of elected officials and the existing asset disclosure requirements for civil servants and other constitutional authorities. The committee urged the institutionalization of a mechanism for regular filing and public disclosure of judge’s assets. The report underscored the importance of asset declarations in bolstering public confidence in the judiciary.
