NEW DELHI (March 22, 2025) – The BJP is poised to secure the Delhi mayoral election next month, receiving a significant boost from the nomination of 14 MLAs to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) by Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta. Eleven of the nominated MLAs are from the BJP, while three represent the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). These nominated MLAs hold voting power in the upcoming mayoral and deputy mayoral elections.
The BJP’s move is part of its strategy to establish a “triple-engine” government, controlling the Centre, Delhi state, and now the MCD. The party secured a resounding victory in the Delhi Assembly elections last month, winning 48 out of 70 seats. This contrasts sharply with the AAP’s 22 seats, a significant drop from their previous performance.
A senior Delhi BJP official expressed confidence in their mayoral victory, citing the nominated MLAs, potential defections from the AAP, and the party’s overall vote share. The official also highlighted the advantage of the anti-defection law not applying to civic bodies.
While the AAP narrowly won the last mayoral election in November 2024, the BJP’s increased strength in the MCD, fueled by recent defections from AAP, significantly improves its chances. The BJP argues that their increased strength, along with the nominated MLAs, will secure their victory in the upcoming elections. The elections are scheduled for April.
