**Kannur, Kerala – March 21, 2025** – A former village officer in Kannur district, K. Vinod, was sentenced to seven years rigorous imprisonment and fined ₹50,000 for accepting a ₹2,000 bribe. The Thalassery Vigilance Court delivered the verdict on Thursday, March 20th.

Vinod, currently serving as village officer in Thiruvananthapuram district, was found guilty of demanding a ₹5,000 bribe to process land tax registration for a complainant’s father. He received ₹3,000 initially and was caught red-handed accepting the remaining ₹2,000 in a sting operation conducted by the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau on March 25, 2014.

Enquiry Commissioner and Special Judge (Vigilance) K. Ramakrishnan ruled that the sentences under different sections would run concurrently. Following the judgment, Vinod was taken into custody and remanded to jail. The court stated that accepting money for government services constitutes bribery and falls under the purview of corruption.
