Fri Mar 21 00:00:00 UTC 2025: ## UC San Diego Students Obscure “M” in Show of Support for Basketball Team

**LA JOLLA, CA** – In a unique display of school spirit, UC San Diego students have engaged in a playful act of censorship leading up to the Tritons’ first-ever NCAA men’s basketball tournament appearance. Students, primarily members of the Triton Tide fan club, have been covering the letter “M” on signs, buildings, and walkways across campus.

This unusual tactic is a nod to the rivalry between Ohio State and Michigan, the Tritons’ first-round opponent. Ohio State students famously avoid the letter “M” during the week of their football matchup with Michigan. UC San Diego students have adopted this tradition to show their support for the Tritons as they face the Wolverines Thursday night.

“I was just crazy about it,” said student Braylon Booker. Fellow student Jake Leland added, “I support it. I also crossed that letter out around my residence.” The students began their playful protest on Sunday, celebrating the Tritons’ historic tournament berth. “This is the first year we’re eligible… So I think it’s a big deal we actually did it, and we’re the one talked about as an upset in the bracket right now,” Leland stated.

The university confirmed the initiative was entirely student-led. Tip-off for the game is scheduled for 7 PM Thursday.
