**Chennai, March 21, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) has approved a budget prioritizing flood mitigation, allocating a significant ₹1,032 crore to the Storm-water Drain Department. This represents the largest allocation to any single department in the Corporation’s budget, which was passed by the Council on Friday.
The allocation will fund numerous projects aimed at constructing new storm-water drains and improving existing infrastructure. Several specific projects were highlighted, including the replacement of a damaged drain in Anna Nagar (ward 103) at a cost of ₹1.1 crore, and the rebuilding of a 776-meter drain in the same zone (ward 104) for ₹2.83 crore. Further projects totaling ₹17.6 crore were approved for Anna Nagar, focusing on the reconstruction of damaged drains across several avenues. In Teynampet (ward 110), three projects totaling approximately ₹4.7 crore were also approved for new drain construction.
Mayor R. Priya and GCC Commissioner J. Kumaragurubaran chaired the Council meeting where these resolutions were passed. The projects are funded through the GCC’s Capital Fund. The Chief Engineer (General), K. Vijayakumar, approved the estimates for several of the projects. The substantial investment underscores the Corporation’s commitment to enhancing the city’s resilience against future flooding.
