Fri Mar 21 16:42:41 UTC 2025: ## Jadavpur University Rocked by Fresh Ragging Allegations, 19 Months After Fatal Incident

**Kolkata, March 21, 2025** – Jadavpur University is facing renewed scrutiny after a second-year postgraduate student reported being ragged and verbally abused on March 18th. This marks the third reported ragging incident at the prestigious Kolkata institution in less than two years, reigniting outrage and raising serious concerns about campus safety.

The victim, a Film Studies student, alleges he was harassed for hours by a group of 10-12 known offenders, who even threatened to rape his mother. He claims the group maintains a culture of ragging within the university hostel, though he emphasizes that this behavior does not represent the entire institution. He highlighted the support he has received from several students, faculty, and staff who have voiced their solidarity.

This latest incident comes 19 months after a first-year undergraduate student died following a brutal ragging incident on August 9th, 2023. The father of the deceased student, Ramprasad Kundu, expressed deep frustration over the lack of justice in his son’s case and the continued occurrence of ragging incidents. He questioned the university’s failure to hold perpetrators accountable and warned that the ongoing problem could deter prospective students from attending the institution.

Jadavpur University’s interim Vice Chancellor, Bhaskar Gupta, confirmed that an official complaint has been received and an inquiry committee has been formed to investigate the matter. A similar incident involving an engineering student was also reported in July 2024.

The repeated occurrences of ragging at Jadavpur University highlight the urgent need for stronger measures to prevent and address this pervasive issue. The university’s response and the outcome of the ongoing investigation will be crucial in determining whether lasting changes can be implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of its students.
