**New Delhi, March 21, 2025** – A Delhi court today dismissed the bail application of Sheikh Abdul Rashid, a Member of Parliament from Baramulla, currently imprisoned in Tihar jail on terror funding charges. Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh denied the plea, rejecting arguments made by Mr. Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid.
Mr. Rashid, arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in 2017 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, had previously challenged a lower court’s refusal to grant him custody parole to attend the ongoing Parliament session. The NIA opposed the parole request, stating that his MP status should not exempt him from the consequences of imprisonment. They argued that he had no inherent right to attend Parliament while in custody.
While the Delhi High Court will consider Mr. Rashid’s plea to attend the Parliament session on March 25th, for now, he remains in custody. The case continues to unfold, raising questions about the balance between an MP’s duties and the legal proceedings against him.
