**Nagpur, March 20, 2025** – Curfew has been partially lifted in several areas of Nagpur following three days of violence sparked by protests demanding the removal of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb. The unrest, which began Monday night, saw violent mobs rampage through central Nagpur after rumors spread that a religiously significant cloth (“chadar”) had been burned during demonstrations led by right-wing groups Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal.
A curfew was initially imposed across several police station areas, including Kotwali, Ganeshpeth, Tehsil, Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shanti Nagar, Sakkardara, Nandanvan, Imambada, Yashodhara Nagar, and Kapil Nagar. However, Police Commissioner Ravinder Singal announced the complete lifting of curfew in Nandanvan and Kapil Nagar, and a partial relaxation from 2 pm to 4 pm in Lakadganj, Pachpaoli, Shantinagar, Sakkardara, and Imambada to allow residents to purchase essential supplies. Security personnel remain deployed to maintain law and order.
Meanwhile, the cyber police have initiated legal action, booking six individuals on charges of sedition and spreading misinformation through social media during the violence. These arrests are part of a larger investigation involving four FIRs and 50 accused. Authorities have also requested information from Facebook, X, Instagram, and YouTube to identify and block approximately 230 profiles linked to the unrest.
