Wed Mar 19 00:01:51 UTC 2025: ## Stranded Astronauts Return to Earth After Nine-Month Space Odyssey

**Cape Canaveral, FL** – Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore splashed down safely off the coast of Florida this morning, concluding a nine-month ordeal that began as an eight-day mission to the International Space Station (ISS). Their journey home, aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft, marked the end of a saga that captivated the world.

Williams and Wilmore, along with NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Roscosmos cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, launched to the ISS on June 5th, 2024, on a Boeing Starliner. However, propulsion issues with the Starliner left them stranded after the intended eight-day mission. The capsule was deemed unsafe for return, leading to a nine-month extended stay.

After months of uncertainty, SpaceX was tasked with their return. A Dragon capsule, carrying the Crew-9 astronauts and their replacements, Crew-10, docked with the ISS earlier this week. The return journey itself lasted 17 hours, ending with a dramatic parachute descent and splashdown at 3:27 am EST. Video footage shows Williams waving and giving a thumbs-up upon exiting the capsule, greeted by a NASA recovery team.

The successful return has been hailed as a triumph, especially by the White House, which issued a statement crediting President Trump for securing their rescue after he accused the previous Biden administration of abandoning them. The White House tweet celebrated the “promise made, promise kept” regarding the rescue.

The mission also drew attention to the considerable health challenges astronauts face after long durations in space. Williams and Wilmore will now undergo medical evaluations to address potential bone and muscle loss, radiation exposure, and vision impairment, common effects of prolonged exposure to microgravity and radiation.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed pride in Williams’ accomplishment, publicly releasing a letter he wrote to her expressing India’s support and admiration for her perseverance. The letter was shared on social media by Union Minister Jitendra Singh.
