**Kolkata, March 19, 2025** – Visva-Bharati University, the only central university in West Bengal founded by Rabindranath Tagore, has appointed Dr. Probir Kumar Ghosh as its new full-time Vice-Chancellor. Dr. Ghosh, an alumnus of the university and former director of ICAR-National Institute of Biotic Stress Management in Chhattisgarh, assumed office on Wednesday, ending a 15-month period during which the university was led by three officiating Vice-Chancellors.

The appointment, announced in a Central government letter on Tuesday, is for a five-year term or until Dr. Ghosh reaches the age of 70, whichever comes first. A senior professor at the university noted that Dr. Ghosh faces significant challenges, including filling key vacant positions such as Registrar, Finance Officer, and Directors, and addressing controversies that have plagued the institution in recent years. The professor expressed hope that Dr. Ghosh’s experience and leadership will help rejuvenate the university and improve its national and international standing. The preservation of the university’s World Heritage status is also a key priority.
