**Bengaluru, India** – While Virat Kohli embarks on another IPL season with Royal Challengers Bangalore, a former teammate from their triumphant 2008 U19 World Cup squad is taking a different path to success. Tanmay Srivastava, who was the top scorer in the U19 World Cup final, is making his umpiring debut in the IPL 2025 season at the age of 35.
Srivastava’s cricketing career, which included a contract with Punjab Kings, ultimately fell short of the meteoric rise experienced by Kohli. After retiring from playing at 30, while captaining Uttarakhand, he chose to pursue a second innings in cricket. He explained his decision to the Times of India, stating he had to decide between prolonging his playing career or securing a longer-term successful path.
Srivastava’s transition wasn’t easy. He completed his Level 2 coaching certification but recognized his limitations. He decided to focus on umpiring, a rigorous undertaking which involved late nights of study to master the laws of the game. The Board’s encouragement of younger umpires, offering some relaxation in the requirements, aided him in his pursuit.
While he hasn’t yet received an on-field assignment, Srivastava remains hopeful. He juggled his umpiring studies with roles as an RCB talent scout and coach at the National Cricket Academy. He remains in contact with Kohli and is excited about the possibility of crossing paths during the IPL season. His journey is a testament to adaptability and perseverance in the world of cricket, transforming from a star player to a respected umpire within the prestigious IPL.
