**GAZA CITY** – A UN worker was killed and five others seriously injured in an Israeli strike on a UN headquarters in Deir el-Balah, Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. The ministry stated the casualties were foreign UN staff and were taken to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital. Footage shows UN vehicles and an ambulance transporting injured men, some wearing UNMAS (United Nations Mine Action Service) vests, to the hospital.
However, the Israeli army vehemently denied targeting any UN building in the area, stating that there was no IDF operational activity at the site. An army spokesperson confirmed to AFP that the IDF did not strike the UN compound.
This conflicting account comes amidst a significant escalation in violence. Gaza’s civil defense agency reported 13 deaths from Israeli airstrikes on Wednesday alone, following overnight raids that killed over 400 people – the deadliest day since a fragile ceasefire on January 19th. The Gaza health ministry updated its war death toll to 49,547 on Wednesday, a staggering increase of 970 deaths in just 48 hours. The ongoing conflict, triggered by Hamas’s October 7th attack on Israel, continues to claim a devastating number of lives. The UN has yet to independently confirm the details of the incident involving its staff.
