**COIMBATORE, March 19, 2025** – The Palakkad Division of Southern Railway has announced a significant increase in freight loading and revenue for the 2024-25 fiscal year. Freight loading rose from 5.90 million tonnes to 6.41 million tonnes, a substantial increase reflecting growing demand for rail transport in the region. This growth translated into a 36.5% surge in freight earnings, reaching ₹583.37 crore compared to ₹427.64 crore the previous year.

The division plays a vital role in transporting essential goods across north Kerala, Dakshina Kannada, and Tamil Nadu, supporting industries, agriculture, and infrastructure development. Key commodities transported include coal, petroleum coke, fertilizers, cement, ballast, and petroleum products. A new revenue stream has been added with the commencement of laterite stone freight from Ullal station, generating ₹37.5 lakh per rake.

Improvements in infrastructure, such as dedicated restrooms at Ullal station for loading and unloading workers, have further enhanced operational efficiency and worker well-being.

Divisional Railway Manager Arun Kumar Chaturvedi attributed the success to the division’s commitment to cost-effective, efficient, and environmentally sustainable freight transportation. He highlighted the division’s crucial role in bolstering industrial growth, supporting agriculture, and facilitating infrastructure development across southern India. The consistent, reliable service offered by the Palakkad Division has attracted new freight traffic, solidifying its position as a major logistical hub in the region.
