GAZA CITY/JERUSALEM – Israel launched a major wave of air strikes on Gaza on Tuesday, killing at least 404 Palestinians and wounding over 560, according to Gaza’s Ministry of Health. The attacks, which targeted multiple areas across the Gaza Strip, mark a significant escalation in the conflict and shatter a fragile ceasefire that had been in place since January 19.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a televised address, declared the strikes “only the beginning” of a renewed offensive against Hamas. He vowed that Israeli forces would continue to strike Hamas with “increasing force” and that any future ceasefire negotiations would only occur “under fire.” Netanyahu stated that Israel’s military objectives include the release of all hostages held by Hamas, the elimination of Hamas, and ensuring Gaza no longer poses a threat to Israel.
The renewed violence follows an impasse in negotiations regarding a second phase of a ceasefire agreement. This phase was intended to secure the release of remaining Hamas captives and establish a permanent ceasefire. Israel rejected a Hamas offer to release some hostages in exchange for the commencement of the second phase and an end to the Israeli blockade. Netanyahu blamed Hamas for the failure of negotiations, claiming they refused a US-brokered proposal to extend the ceasefire.
Netanyahu also asserted that Hamas is responsible for all civilian casualties in Gaza, urging Palestinians to distance themselves from Hamas operatives.
The intense air strikes have drawn international condemnation and raised concerns about the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The future of the conflict remains uncertain, with both sides dug in and further escalation a distinct possibility.
