Wed Mar 19 15:20:43 UTC 2025: ## Ernakulam Battles Hepatitis A Outbreak

**KOCHI, March 19, 2025** – Ernakulam district in Kerala is implementing a two-pronged approach to combat a surge in infectious diseases, particularly hepatitis A. The initiative, a joint effort by the district administration, Health department, and Ernakulam district panchayat, combines public awareness campaigns with punitive measures against those responsible for spreading disease.

A recent review by the district public health committee revealed a significant increase in hepatitis A cases in Thrikkakara, Kalamassery, Eloor municipalities, and Thiruvaniyoor, primarily affecting industrial units, hostels, and apartment complexes. While dengue cases have decreased in the past month, the hepatitis A outbreak prompted immediate action.

District Medical Officer Dr. Asha Devi announced that violators will face prosecution under the Kerala Public Health Act, 2023. This includes fines ranging from ₹2,000 to ₹30,000 for offenses such as distributing contaminated food or water and failing to vaccinate domestic animals. Already, three establishments, including a pig farm, have been shut down for violating health regulations.

The focus is now on tackling the contaminated water supply suspected of contributing to the hepatitis A spread. Authorities are working with the police and local bodies to identify and prosecute those responsible for distributing contaminated water, and ensuring that water sources are regularly chlorinated. Water tankers are also being targeted, with transporters required to possess necessary licenses and permits. The district administration is urging public cooperation in this effort to contain the outbreak.
