MUMBAI, INDIA – March 19, 2025 – Business tycoon Anand Mahindra expressed immense relief at the safe return of astronaut Sunita Williams to Earth following a prolonged mission at the International Space Station (ISS). Williams, along with fellow astronaut Butch Wilmore, returned on Wednesday after a nearly nine-month stay, significantly longer than their planned week-long mission due to technical issues with Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft.
Mahindra, chairman of the Mahindra Group, shared a photo of a chance encounter with Williams almost two years ago in Washington D.C., during the India-US Hi-Tech Handshake. The photo also included tech entrepreneur Vrinda Kapoor and billionaire Mukesh Ambani. He described Williams as “courage personified” and celebrated her safe splashdown with a welcoming message on X (formerly Twitter).
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) also issued a statement welcoming Williams’ return, praising her resilience and dedication as an inspiration to space enthusiasts worldwide. ISRO further expressed their hope to utilize Williams’ expertise in space exploration as India strives to become a developed nation. The agency’s statement also highlighted the achievement as a testament to the collaborative efforts of NASA, SpaceX, and the USA.
Williams and Wilmore’s extended stay was a result of unforeseen technical difficulties that delayed their return. Their safe return marks the successful conclusion of a challenging mission.
