**Chennai, March 19, 2025** – The Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) announced a significant budget allocation of ₹43 crore for the repair and improvement of 300 city parks. The announcement, made by Mayor R. Priya during the presentation of the 2025-26 financial year budget, highlights a focus on improving urban green spaces.
Other key initiatives in the budget include a substantial increase in the Councillor’s Ward Development Fund (to ₹60 lakh per ward) and the Mayor’s Special Development Fund (to ₹4 crore), aimed at bolstering local development projects.
A major technological upgrade will see the introduction of a QR code system for various tax and license payments, simplifying the payment process for residents. Significant funds have also been allocated for road maintenance (₹40 crore), including pedestrian-friendly improvements, and for beautifying areas under flyovers in several key locations (₹42 crore).
Animal welfare received attention with ₹3 crore earmarked for rabies vaccinations and deworming for stray dogs, along with the establishment of an emergency care center and a pet burial ground. Ten new veterinary hospitals are also planned.
The budget also prioritizes education, with allocations for English-speaking skills enhancement programmes (₹20 crore), digital learning aids for schools, and competitive exam support (₹40.50 crore). Further allocations were made for infrastructure improvements in schools and healthcare facilities, including generators for crematoriums, equipment for hospitals, and additional staffing for schools.
