Wed Mar 19 01:21:02 UTC 2025: ## Gujarat Village Celebrates Return of Astronaut Sunita Williams

**Ahmedabad, Gujarat –** The ancestral village of NASA astronaut Sunita Williams, Jhulasan in Mehsana district, erupted in jubilant celebration Wednesday following her safe return to Earth. Villagers lit firecrackers, danced, and performed aarti at a local temple to mark the successful splashdown of the SpaceX Crew Dragon spacecraft, bringing Ms. Williams and three crewmates back after a nearly nine-month mission on the International Space Station (ISS).

The celebrations followed a successful splashdown, confirmed by SpaceX. NASA astronaut Nick Hague, a fellow crew member, reported the crew was “grinning ear to ear” upon their return. SpaceX’s announcement on X, “Splashdown of Dragon confirmed – welcome back to Earth, Nick, Suni, Butch, and Aleks!”, echoed the joyous occasion.

Prior to the landing, Ms. Williams’ cousin, Dinesh Rawal, had organized a Yagna in Ahmedabad on Tuesday, praying for her safe return. NASA commentator Sandra Jones described a breathtaking landing scene, with the capsule descending under parachutes to a calm ocean. SpaceX recovery vessels are now retrieving the spacecraft.

The crew, including Butch Wilmore and Russian cosmonaut Aleksandr Gorbunov, will undergo medical checks and acclimation to Earth’s gravity at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The return follows intense speculation surrounding the crew’s extended stay in space, with the astronauts repeatedly refuting claims of being stranded or abandoned.

The successful mission concludes a chapter of anticipation and celebration, highlighting the global impact of space exploration and the pride felt by Ms. Williams’ home village in her achievement.
