**Cape Canaveral, FL** – Astronauts Sunita Williams and Butch Wilmore, along with NASA’s Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, have returned to Earth after a nine-month space mission, significantly longer than the initially planned eight days. The crew landed safely off the coast of Florida aboard a SpaceX Dragon spacecraft.
The extended mission was due to technical issues with the Starliner capsule, stranding Williams and Wilmore in space. While the extended stay sparked discussion regarding overtime pay, former NASA astronaut Cady Coleman stated that NASA does not provide overtime pay for such situations. However, astronauts do receive a daily allowance of $4, amounting to approximately $1144 (₹98,956) for their 286 days in space. NASA has yet to release an official statement on the matter.
To bring Williams and Wilmore back, NASA deployed SpaceX’s Crew-9 mission. A Dragon spacecraft, carrying only two crew members instead of the usual four to accommodate the stranded astronauts, was launched on a Falcon 9 rocket in September. Crew-10 has since replaced Crew-9 at the International Space Station.
The extended period in microgravity raises concerns about the astronauts’ health. Preerna Chandra, Project Manager at Delhi’s Nehru Planetarium, noted that astronauts often require rehabilitation after long space missions due to the physiological changes experienced in zero gravity. Williams, a veteran astronaut with a previous mission in 2006, will likely require an extensive recovery period. Williams, born in 1965 to an Indian father and a Slovenian mother, made her first trip to the ISS aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery.
