**Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra – March 18, 2025** – Increased security measures are in place at the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar following protests by right-wing Hindu organizations demanding its removal. The demonstrations, which took place across Maharashtra including Pune, Kolhapur, and Ahilyanagar, saw the destruction of a mock tomb in Kolhapur and aggressive displays in Pune.
The protests were triggered by recent praise of Aurangzeb by Samajwadi Party MP Abu Azmi and a subsequent call for the tomb’s demolition by a descendant of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The Maharashtra government, led by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has responded by deploying additional police personnel to guard the tomb, designated a ‘Monument of National Importance’ by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Mr. Fadnavis reiterated that while the ASI’s protection of the site necessitates adherence to legal procedures, he would not tolerate the glorification of Aurangzeb.
The Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and Bajrang Dal, in a memorandum to the collector, characterized the tomb as a symbol of oppression and injustice, threatening “kar seva” (voluntary service) if the government fails to act. BJP minister Nitesh Rane echoed these sentiments, drawing parallels to the demolition of the Babri Masjid.
The opposition has criticized the BJP’s handling of the situation, accusing the government of inaction and suggesting a direct order for the tomb’s removal. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP-SP have questioned the government’s response, highlighting the perceived influence of the RSS and its affiliated organizations. The controversy continues to escalate, raising concerns about communal harmony in the state.
