**Kyiv, Ukraine –** Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the appointment of Andrii Hnatov as the new chief of the general staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on Sunday, March 16, 2025. This follows the ongoing conflict with Russia, with fighting concentrated in Russia’s Kursk region and increasing pressure in the eastern Donetsk region.
Hnatov replaces Anatoliy Barhylevych, who served since February 2024 and will now serve as the general inspector of the Defense Ministry. Defense Minister Rustem Umerov stated that the change is part of a systematic transformation aimed at enhancing the combat effectiveness of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Barhylevych will continue to contribute by overseeing military standards and discipline.
The appointment comes as Ukrainian forces are reportedly retreating in the Kursk region, where they had previously gained significant territory. Russia claims to have retaken Sudzha, the largest town occupied by Ukraine in the region. Meanwhile, Russian forces continue their advance in the Donetsk region. Oleksandr Syrskyi remains commander-in-chief.
President Zelenskyy has overseen numerous personnel changes within the government and military since the start of the full-scale Russian invasion in 2022. While Ukraine achieved a surprise offensive last August, the recent setbacks raise questions about the ongoing conflict and the potential for a ceasefire, a topic reportedly to be discussed by Trump and Putin this week. French President Macron has also stated that the decision on peacekeepers in Ukraine is not for Russia to make.
