PITTSBURGH, PA – Robert Morris University (RMU) Colonials men’s basketball team is heading to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history after winning the Horizon League championship. The team, led by Head Coach Andy Toole, secured their spot with a decisive victory over Youngstown State.
This marks Coach Toole’s fifth NCAA tournament appearance, having previously experienced the event as a player, assistant coach, and head coach. He expressed his excitement for his players, predicting they will experience “the best week of their lives” leading up to the bracket reveal on Sunday.
The Colonials’ success is attributed to a combination of factors, including the team’s resilience and strong chemistry. Six of the team’s top seven scorers are transfers, a testament to Coach Toole’s recruiting prowess. Notable players include Horizon League Player of the Year Alvaro Folgueiras and Kam Woods, who transferred from N.C. State after their Final Four run.
The team’s journey to the championship involved overcoming significant challenges, including a seven-game losing streak last season. Graduate student Ismael Plet highlighted the team’s dedication and perseverance, emphasizing the importance of overcoming moments of doubt and fatigue throughout the season.
While Coach Toole expressed no preference for opponents or venues, ESPN’s latest bracketology projects Robert Morris as a 15th seed, potentially facing No. 2 Tennessee in Cleveland. Despite the anticipated tough competition, the team exudes confidence and a resilient spirit, ready to compete at the highest level. The team celebrated their victory with a welcoming reception upon their return to Pittsburgh. Practices are scheduled for Friday and Saturday before the tournament begins.
