**Bengaluru, March 14, 2025** – The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has successfully completed the undocking of two satellites, marking a significant milestone in India’s space program. The undocking, part of the Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX) mission, was executed at 9:20 am today, nearly two months after the satellites were successfully docked on January 16th.
The SpaDeX mission, launched on December 30th, 2024, involved two satellites, SDX01 (Chaser) and SDX02 (Target), launched aboard the PSLV-C60 rocket. The undocking, achieved in its first attempt, took place in a 460 km circular orbit. ISRO confirmed that both satellites are now orbiting independently and are functioning normally.
This successful undocking completes the demonstration of rendezvous, docking, and undocking capabilities in a circular orbit, making India only the fourth country to achieve this feat, after the U.S., Russia, and China. The agency cited extensive ground simulations and testing as key to the success of the operation. Data was collected from ground stations in Bengaluru, Lucknow, and Mauritius.
ISRO stated that the technology demonstrated by SpaDeX is crucial for future ambitious projects, including sending Indian astronauts to the Moon, lunar sample return missions, and the construction and operation of an Indian Space Station. Further experiments with the satellites are planned. The successful undocking was also highlighted on social media with spectacular video footage of the separation.
