**Mumbai, March 17, 2025** – Mumbai Customs officials announced the seizure of over 10 kilograms of gold, valued at ₹8.47 crore (approximately $10.2 million USD), in four separate operations at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport. Five individuals, including three private airport staff members, have been arrested.

The seizures, conducted between March 13th and 15th, involved sophisticated smuggling techniques. Smugglers concealed the 24-karat gold dust, encased in wax within oval-shaped capsules, in their clothing and undergarments.

In one instance, a private airport staff member was apprehended with 2.8 kg of gold (₹2.27 crore) hidden in his pants pockets. Another airport employee was caught with 2.9 kg (₹2.36 crore) concealed in his underwear. A third airport staffer was arrested after 1.6 kg (₹1.31 crore) was found hidden in his undergarments; two additional accomplices were also arrested in connection with this seizure. Remarkably, 3.1 kg (₹2.53 crore) of gold was discovered in garbage bags from an international flight’s lavatories and pantry.

All those arrested are facing charges under the Customs Act. Investigations are ongoing.
