**HYDERABAD, March 17, 2025** – A 600-person awareness walk organized by the L.V. Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) in Hyderabad on Sunday highlighted the growing threat of glaucoma, a disease affecting over 11 million Indians and leaving 1.1 million blind. The event, focused on early detection of the “silent thief of vision,” featured speakers emphasizing the often-unnoticed onset of the condition.
V.C. Sajjanar, managing director of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation, pledged his organization’s support in raising public awareness through campaigns at bus stations and on buses. He underscored the seriousness of the problem, stating that millions suffer from glaucoma unknowingly.
Sirisha Senthil, head of Glaucoma Services at LVPEI, warned of the disease’s silent progression, affecting one in eight people over 40. She also stressed increased risks for newborns of consanguineous marriages and the dangers of steroid misuse.
Experts urged regular eye check-ups for early detection and prevention of glaucoma-related blindness. The walk served as a crucial reminder of the importance of proactive eye health and the need for widespread public awareness campaigns.
