**Punta Cana, Dominican Republic** – The disappearance of Sudiksha Konanki, a 20-year-old Indian pre-med student from the University of Pittsburgh, during a spring break trip to Punta Cana has sparked a wide-ranging investigation, clouded by conflicting accounts from a person of interest, 22-year-old Joshua Riibe.
Konanki, who was vacationing with friends, was last seen on March 5th at approximately 5:50 am leaving a resort nightclub with Riibe, whom she had met that evening. CCTV footage shows the pair walking arm-in-arm along a resort pathway. Riibe, a college senior from Minnesota and trained lifeguard, has been named a person of interest and his passport has been seized.
Riibe’s account of the night has shifted multiple times. He initially claimed to have vomited after a large wave separated them, leaving Konanki seemingly unharmed and walking away. Later accounts placed her in knee-deep water or walking along the shore before he lost consciousness. He insists a large wave pulled them both out to sea, and despite his lifeguard training, he struggled to stay afloat. He claims to have last seen Konanki walking in shallow water before he passed out on a beach chair. He was later seen returning to his hotel alone.
Riibe’s parents have expressed sorrow for Konanki’s family and asserted their son’s cooperation with authorities. They allege, however, that he was interrogated under duress, without proper legal representation or translation, from March 6th onwards.
Dominican authorities, assisted by the FBI, are conducting an extensive search operation using drones, helicopters, and divers, though they acknowledge the likelihood of finding Konanki alive is slim. While drowning is suspected, Konanki’s family harbors fears of kidnapping and are urging authorities to thoroughly explore all possibilities. The investigation continues.
