GWALIOR, INDIA – A fire broke out early Sunday morning at Kamla Raja Hospital in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh, prompting the evacuation of over 190 patients. According to officials, the blaze started around 1 a.m. in the air conditioning unit of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in the gynecology department.
Quick action by hospital guards and staff, who broke windows to evacuate patients from the ICU, prevented any casualties. All patients, including 13 from the ICU and approximately 180 from other wards, were safely relocated to a nearby super-specialty hospital.
Gwalior Collector Ruchika Chauhan confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation into the cause of the fire, believed to be a short circuit, is underway. A statement from the state Public Relations Department corroborated this assessment. One patient’s attendant described the scene as filled with smoke, highlighting the swift response of hospital personnel.
