Wed Mar 12 16:04:37 UTC 2025: ## India Completes Design for Small Modular Nuclear Reactor

**New Delhi, March 13, 2025** – India has completed the concept design for its Bharat Small Modular Reactor (BSMR), a 200 MW reactor designed for captive power in energy-intensive industries and remote areas. Union Minister of State for Science and Technology Jitendra Singh announced the completion in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.

The BSMR, a modified version of India’s Pressurised Heavy Water Reactor (PWHR), is a joint project between the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and the Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL). Construction is expected to take 60-72 months once the project receives final approval.

The project will utilize indigenous vendors for equipment and components, with domestic private vendors supplying critical items. The reactor incorporates passive and engineered safety features and plans for on-site spent fuel storage.

The BSMR initiative aligns with the government’s larger goal of achieving 100 GW of nuclear power capacity by 2047. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman previously announced a ₹20,000 crore investment towards this goal, including the development of smaller 55 MW Bharat Small Reactors (BSRs). Currently, India has approximately 8.1 GW of installed nuclear power capacity.
