NEW YORK (AP) — Top-seeded St. John’s cruised to a decisive 78-57 victory over Butler in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals Thursday night. RJ Luis Jr. led the Red Storm with 20 points, while Kadary Richmond contributed 15 points, nine assists, and eight rebounds. Aaron Scott also added 15 points for St. John’s, who extended their winning streak to seven games and improved their record to 28-4.
The Red Storm, celebrating their first outright Big East regular-season title in 40 years, dominated the game, building an early 18-3 lead and never looking back. They held Butler to 34.5% shooting and outrebounded them significantly. Patrick McCaffery led Butler with 16 points.
This marks St. John’s second consecutive appearance in the Big East semifinals after a 23-year absence. They will face either Xavier or Marquette in the semifinals Friday night at Madison Square Garden, aiming for their fourth Big East Tournament title and first since 2000. St. John’s boasts an undefeated 19-0 home record this season, including a perfect 10-0 mark at Madison Square Garden. The last time they achieved an unbeaten home season was 1931-32. WNBA star Caitlin Clark was in attendance, supporting her boyfriend, Butler assistant coach Connor McCaffery.
