Fri Mar 14 07:10:00 UTC 2025: ## Meta to Launch Crowdsourced Fact-Checking Tool, Borrowing from X

**MENLO PARK, CA** – Meta is set to launch “Community Notes,” a new crowdsourced fact-checking feature for Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, leveraging technology initially developed by Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter). The tool, detailed in a blog post Thursday, will utilize an open-source algorithm similar to X’s Community Notes program. While Meta plans to adapt the algorithm over time, the company acknowledges its initial reliance on X’s technology.

Community Notes will allow vetted users over 18 with verified phone numbers to add context to posts, including those by public figures and Meta itself. The notes, however, will not affect content visibility or sharing. Meta emphasizes that this feature is not a replacement for its content moderation efforts. Approximately 200,000 users have already signed up to contribute, with the waitlist remaining open.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg presented Community Notes as a replacement for third-party fact-checking, which the company discontinued earlier this year. The system requires multiple user agreements to publish a note, aiming to prevent coordinated manipulation. While Meta is not currently open-sourcing its version, the company plans to begin testing in the U.S. next week, with a nationwide rollout contingent on successful beta testing. Experts caution that while helpful, such systems are imperfect and could be exploited.
