Fri Mar 14 15:12:39 UTC 2025: ## Historic Kozhikode Hall Demolished to Make Way for Modern Complex
**Kozhikode, Kerala, March 14, 2025** – The Tagore Centenary Hall, a 51-year-old cultural landmark in Kozhikode, is being demolished to make way for a new ₹67.75 crore multipurpose complex. The Kozhikode Corporation, which secured administrative sanction for the project, expects construction to begin within three months.
The hall, built to commemorate the birth centenary of Rabindranath Tagore and inaugurated in 1973, served as a vital cultural hub, hosting theatre performances, cultural events, and occasional film screenings. Despite recent repair works, persistent structural issues led to the decision to replace it entirely.
The planned three-story complex will boast a 2,000-seat convention center, a 150-seat mini-hall, three 130-seat multiplex cinemas, a 500-person dining hall, a modern kitchen, advanced audio-visual equipment, parking for 150 cars, a pay-and-park area, a 100-seat open amphitheatre, bookshops, a cultural street, and a jogging track. The Corporation will secure ₹49 crore in funding through a loan from the Kerala Urban and Rural Development Finance Corporation. Demolition is anticipated to be completed within three months.
