**Mumbai, India** – A viral video showing an Airtel employee in Mumbai refusing to speak Marathi to a customer has sparked outrage and calls for greater respect for the local language. BJP MLC Chitra Wagh, head of the party’s women’s wing in Maharashtra, has demanded immediate action against the employee and called for mandatory Marathi proficiency for all Airtel employees in the state.

The video, which has circulated widely on social media, depicts a heated exchange where the employee reportedly states, “Why should I speak Marathi? Where is it written to speak Marathi in Maharashtra?” The customer alleges the employee was rude, dismissive, and failed to address his complaint.

Ms. Wagh condemned the employee’s behavior as “arrogant and rude,” insisting that anyone residing in Maharashtra should be proficient in Marathi or at least willing to learn and respect it. She directly addressed Airtel, demanding that future recruitment prioritize Marathi speakers and that existing employees undergo language training.

While Airtel has not issued a formal statement, officials have acknowledged the incident as “unfortunate” and indicated that measures have been taken. The nature of these measures remains unclear. The incident has ignited a debate about language rights and customer service in Maharashtra.
