Wed Mar 12 21:50:00 UTC 2025: ## Bay Area Hit by Strong Thunderstorms, Flash Flood Warning Issued
**SAN FRANCISCO, CA –** The National Weather Service (NWS) issued a weather alert Wednesday afternoon warning of strong thunderstorms impacting the San Francisco Bay Shoreline, San Francisco Peninsula Coast, Santa Cruz Mountains, and Santa Clara Valley, including San Jose. The alert, in effect until 3 p.m., warns of pea-sized hail and gusty winds capable of downing tree limbs and damaging outdoor objects.
A line of thunderstorms moved northeast at 45 mph, impacting numerous cities including San Jose, Fremont, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara, and many others on the Peninsula. The NWS stressed the danger of torrential rainfall and potential flash flooding, urging residents to avoid driving through flooded roadways.
The NWS also highlighted the dangers of lightning, reminding residents that lightning strikes the US 25 million times annually, resulting in approximately 20 fatalities. They advise seeking indoor shelter whenever possible. If caught outdoors, the NWS recommends finding a low-lying area, avoiding tall objects, and staying away from water.
In addition to the thunderstorm warnings, the NWS provided guidance on safe driving practices during heavy rain. Key recommendations include increasing following distance to four seconds, slowing down, avoiding outer lanes to minimize hydroplaning, and maintaining a safe distance from large vehicles. Drivers are advised to turn on headlights and to pull over if visibility becomes severely impaired.
The alert comes as a reminder of the importance of weather awareness and preparedness during storm season. Residents are encouraged to monitor weather reports and heed all official warnings.
