Wed Mar 12 15:53:23 UTC 2025: ## Russia Reclaims Territory in Kursk Region, Ukraine Suffers Setbacks
**Moscow, March 12, 2025** – Russian forces have reportedly made significant gains in the Kursk region, reclaiming five villages previously held by Ukrainian troops and entering the town of Sudzha, according to the Russian military. This marks a reversal of fortunes following a Ukrainian offensive launched last August. Military bloggers suggest Ukraine risks losing control of the entire border region, having ceded dozens of square kilometers in the past week.
The Russian defense ministry confirmed the recapture of Kazachya Loknya, 1st Knyazhy, 2nd Knyazhy, Zamostye, and Mirny, all near Sudzha. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the situation as positive, with Russian troops reportedly shown raising the flag in Sudzha’s center in videos circulated by Russian news outlets.
The Kursk region represented a key bargaining chip for Ukraine in potential land swaps with Russia. However, the recent Russian advances significantly weaken Ukraine’s position. The ongoing conflict has seen Russia seize and occupy approximately one-fifth of Ukrainian territory since 2014.
The intensified fighting has also resulted in civilian casualties. Four people were killed in a Ukrainian attack on an agricultural plant east of the conflict zone, according to acting Kursk region governor Alexander Khinshtein. The situation remains tense as Russia continues its offensive.
