NEW DELHI, March 13, 2025 – Syed Abid Ali, a renowned Indian all-rounder, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 83 after a prolonged illness. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) issued a statement expressing its condolences, praising Ali’s contributions to Indian cricket and describing him as embodying “the spirit of the game.”
Ali, a member of a celebrated generation of Hyderabad cricketers, was a key player in India’s historic Test series victories in England and the West Indies in 1971. His all-round skills – encompassing sharp fielding, impactful bowling, and capable batting – were instrumental in these wins. He played 29 Test matches and 5 ODIs for India between 1967 and 1974, accumulating 1,018 runs and taking 47 wickets. His career highlights include a sensational 6/55 in his Test debut against Australia and scores of 78 and 81 in a Sydney Test.
