Wed Mar 12 02:44:51 UTC 2025: ## Surfer’s Death Confirmed as Shark Attack After Bite Marks Found on Board
**WESTERN AUSTRALIA** – A search and rescue operation for a missing surfer off Wharton Beach in Western Australia has transitioned to a recovery effort following the discovery of a surfboard bearing significant bite marks. Police have confirmed the death of 37-year-old Steven Payne, identifying the incident as a fatal shark attack.
The attack occurred around midday Tuesday, approximately 50 meters from shore, while Payne was surfing with two others. Witnesses reported seeing a shark in the water moments before hearing screams. Despite the efforts of fellow surfers, they were unable to assist Payne.
Senior Sergeant Christopher Taylor of the Western Australia Police Force stated, “I can confirm that our search is a recovery, not a rescue.” Police recovered Payne’s surfboard, which exhibited clear evidence of a shark attack. While Payne’s body has yet to be recovered, the bite marks on the board leave little doubt as to the cause of death.
This marks Australia’s fourth fatal shark attack in recent months. Previous incidents include the deaths of a 17-year-old girl in February, a 28-year-old surfer in January, and a 40-year-old man in December. Authorities are continuing the recovery operation for Payne’s remains.
