Wed Mar 12 07:27:40 UTC 2025: ## Adani Served Summons in US Bribery Case via Hague Convention
**New Delhi, March 12, 2025** – The Indian government confirmed that it facilitated the service of a U.S. summons on Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, in connection with a bribery lawsuit filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The Department of Legal Affairs (DLA) used the Hague Convention to forward the SEC’s summons to an Ahmedabad court for service.
The SEC alleges that Adani and his nephew, Sagar Adani, concealed hundreds of millions of dollars in bribes paid to Indian officials to secure above-market energy purchase agreements. The lawsuit, filed in conjunction with federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of New York, is ongoing.
The DLA’s actions followed a request from U.S. authorities under the 1965 Hague Convention. The government initially declined to confirm this action in response to a Right to Information request, stating it had received no such request as of February 21st, despite forwarding the summons to the court on February 25th.
The Adani Group’s response to the lawsuit has been marked by uncertainty. However, following the election of President Donald Trump, who has paused enforcement of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the group reportedly resumed exploring business opportunities in the U.S. Prime Minister Modi declined to comment on the matter during a recent visit to Washington, D.C., characterizing it as a “personal matter.”
